| | Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. operates as a regenerative medicine company, focusing on the clinical development of autologous cell products for the repair or regeneration of multiple human tissues, based on its proprietary Tissue Repair Cell (TRC) technology. The companys TRC technology is based on its cell products, which are a unique cell mixture containing large numbers of stem and progenitor cells, produced outside of the body from a small amount of bone marrow taken from the patient, and the means to produce these products in an automated process. Its TRC-based products are being clinically evaluated for bone regeneration to treat osteonecrosis of the femoral head, which is in ON-CORE Phase III trial in the United States and in pivotal trial in Spain; and vascular regeneration in patients with critical limb ischemia that is in RESTORE-CLI Phase IIb trial in the United States and in Phase I/II trial in Germany. In addition, Aastrom Biosciences has completed a U.S. Phase I/II severe non-union fracture clinical trial, and is also developing programs to address cardiac and neural regeneration indications. TRC-based products have received Orphan Drug Designation from the Food and Drug Administration for use in the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head and the treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy, a severe chronic heart disease.
