Pall 1s-qtr sales suffer due to shaky economy, results miss Wall Street estimates

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (AP) -- Water filtration company Pall Corp. said Wednesday its revenue slipped in the fiscal first quarter, with industrial sales falling due to the effects of the shaky economy.

In the three months ended Oct. 31, Pall said its revenue decreased to 5.4 percent to $546.9 million, compared with the same period a year earlier. That fell short of the $570.7 million that analysts expected, according to Thomson Reuters. Pall said industrial revenue slid 14 percent, to $308 million, and life sciences revenue rose 8.4 percent to $238.9 million.

Sales at all three industrial divisions -- energy, water and process technology, aerospace and transportation, and microelectronics -- dropped during the quarter.

Energy, water and process technology revenue slid 11 percent to $194.5 million as sales to municipal water, food and beverage, and industrial manufacturing customers decreased. Energy revenue was unchanged from a year ago.

Aerospace and transportation revenue sank 22 percent to $57 million due to fewer flights and less demand for new planes, especially business jets, and less transportation revenue. Military aerospace revenue shrank 30 percent. Microelectronics revenue fell 16 percent to $56.5 million.

However, Pall said biopharmaceutical revenue jumped 12 percent to $143.2 million, and medical sales rose 4 percent to $95.7 million. Biopharmaceutical revenue improved because of greater demand for consumables and vaccines, and medical revenue increased due to greater sales of blood filtering products and sales to hospital critical care units, Pall said.

The company plans to report its complete first quarter results on Dec. 9 after the market closes. Analysts currently expect a profit of 42 cents per share.
